How Podcasts Improve Member Education and Engagement

Most of the conversations I have about podcasts focus on engagement.
How do we reach members?
How do we get their attention?
How do we stay top-of-mind?
These are good questions. But they miss something equally important.
Podcasts aren't just a way to communicate with members. They're one of the most effective ways to educate them.
Here's the challenge every membership organization faces: members need learning, but they don't have time for traditional formats. They need continuing education but can't make webinars. They need to understand policy changes that affect them, but don't want to read a 10-page guide.
The problem isn't that members don't want to learn. It's that traditional educational content requires dedicated time and attention they don't have.
Audio changes that.
Learning becomes something that happens alongside life, not instead of it.
And learning through listening sticks differently. When you read, you're processing text. When you listen to someone explain a concept, you're hearing their thinking, their emphasis, their nuance. The human voice carries context that text simply can't.
This is why audio-based education has higher completion rates. You don't need to be at your desk or schedule around other priorities. You just press play when you have a moment.
And because it's audio, members can revisit episodes whenever they need a refresher. It becomes a resource, not just another message.
So when organizations ask me about podcasts, they're usually thinking about engagement — reaching people, staying top-of-mind.
But the education potential of a podcast? That might be even more valuable.
Because it's one thing to reach your members. It's another to help them grow and become more capable because of their relationship with you.
